What is CBT?

CBT is an evidence based short term treatment. It aims to help people solve problems and improve the way they think and feel. It is an educational approach based on scientific principles. The focus of the therapy is to enable clients to generate solutions to problems based on techniques learned in therapy, which are more effective than their present coping strategies.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is based on two principles:

  1. Our thoughts and beliefs are connected to our behaviours (what we do, how we react), moods and physical symptoms and to the events in our lives.
  2. The perception of an event affects our emotional, behavioural and physiological responses to that event.
  3. Unlike other talking therapies, CBT focuses on the problems and difficulties you have now, rather than issues from your past.
